Maddie Edwards, Principle One, Graduate Consultant

Maddie Edwards

I joined Principle One as a Graduate Business Consultant in June of 2020, having completed my degree in International Business from Loughborough University. Having previously worked in recruitment on my industrial placement year, I really enjoyed being able to interact with clients and understand their needs and wanted to continue to build on this experience. I have always had an interest in law enforcement, as I want to make a difference and help others. When I heard about graduate roles at Principle One, I thought it would be a good starting point in the sector and would also let me develop my skills in client engagement and business development.

I’d originally been offered a role to start in October 2020, but when the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions made it clear that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy my summer off, I began work in June. Starting any graduate role is challenging but starting remotely adds the extra complication of not being able to get to know your colleagues in person. Onboarding was surprisingly easy, with training sessions delivered remotely by subject matter experts across the team and I quickly felt part of the team with a clearly defined role to play – through daily stand-ups, office days in our project bubble and weekly ‘Gin and Learn’ knowledge sharing sessions.

In my first six months working for Principle One I have been working on an interesting project to uplift a case management system for a Digital Forensics Unit. My work has included interviewing user representatives to understand their perspective, preparing presentations to stakeholders, capturing their requirements and generating user stories for the development team. I’ve had real responsibility from day one – and have enjoyed working closely (although mainly remotely) with our customers.

The main benefit of working for a small company is knowing that you make a significant contribution to any work you get involved in - not just to the end customer but to Principle One itself. I’m now getting a chance to build on my Business Analyst skills with agile delivery training and am looking forward to developing my skills as a Scrum Master next year.
